Benefits of garlic supplements

Garlic has been used as a food and western herbal medicine since antiquity. Sulphur compounds known as allicin, ajoene and other alliin, produced when the garlic bulb is crushed or ground or cut, are believed to be responsible for these effects.

Benefits of echinacea supplements

Echinacea is a popular herbal remedy derived from the Asteraceae (daisy) family. It originated in North America, where Native Americans used it to help manage illness and infection. Today, echinacea is well recognised for its immune-supporting properties and is often used to help manage upper respiratory tract infections, like the common cold.

The three different species of echinacea commonly used are Echinacea pallida, Echinacea angustifolia and Echinacea purpurea.  Most echinacea preparations will have either one or more of these forms and are available in tablets or capsules. Echinacea is found in formulas on its own or in combination with other immune-supporting herbs and nutrients.

Benefits of vitamin C supplements

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that is found in some foods and also available as a supplement. Unlike most animals, humans can’t make vitamin C in the body, so they must get it from their diet.

Vitamin C can help to maintain healthy immune function. Vitamin C supplementation may help reduce the duration and severity of the common cold in both children and adults, especially adults with low vitamin C levels or those undergoing physical stress such as athletes.

Benefits of zinc supplementation

Zinc provides support for immune system function. Zinc supplementation may benefit vegans and vegetarians as zinc’s bioavailability is lower in plant foods, as compared to animal foods; and a diet high in legumes and whole grains, which are good sources of zinc and also contain phytates, can bind zinc and inhibit its absorption.
