Once you're ready to start trying for a baby, it may help you to know when you're likely to ovulate. Ovulation is the release of an egg (ovum) from a woman's ovaries, and happens around 14 days before the start of your next period.
Women are fertile from 4-5 days before ovulation to roughly 1-2 days afterwards. This is due to the fact that sperm can survive in your body for 4-5 days, so if you have intercourse 4-5 days before ovulation, the sperm can still be alive when you ovulate. Once your egg has released from the ovaries, it can only survive for 1-2 days, so you are only fertile for this short period following ovulation.
Once you know your ovulation date, you can work out the period of highest fertility (from 4-5 days before ovulation to 1-2 days following).
