What Are the Benefits of Krill Oil?

Published May 16, 2017

We’ve seen an abundance of advertising for krill oil but are you any wiser of krill’s benefits and how it compares to its omega 3 counterpart fish oil?

Krill oil is derived from a tiny crustacean that resides in the icy waters around Antarctica. Just like fish oil, krill is naturally rich in omega 3 fatty acids including EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), which are important for health. In contrast to fish oil, the omega 3 fatty acids from krill come attached to phospholipids. Krill oil offers a number of important health benefits:

  • Antioxidant support

Krill contains the potent antioxidant astaxanthin, which is responsible for its distinctive red colour.

  • Mild osteoarthritis

Studies have shown that krill oil may help reduce joint swelling and stiffness, and increase joint mobility associated with mild osteoarthritis. It may also provide temporary relief of pain from mild osteoarthritis.

  • Heart health

Krill oil supports heart and cardiovascular health, and may assist in the maintenance of cholesterol within the normal range in healthy people.

  • Reduced fishy aftertaste/burp

As krill oil is mostly broken down and absorbed in the small intestine which is below the stomach, it reduces the fishy aftertaste or burp common with other omega 3 supplements.

Krill oil plus fish oil

As superior sources of omega 3 fatty acids, and given their similar and distinctive health benefits, a supplement with krill oil and fish oil might be the right combination for your body. Together they may assist in the management of mild osteoarthritis, help maintain desirable cholesterol levels in healthy people, and support general health and wellbeing.
